Earrings Guide

The earrings guide · Handmade in Barcelona

How to choose
your earrings.

How do you choose earrings you will actually enjoy wearing? Start with their shape, how they sit on the ear and the clothes you reach for most.

This guide brings together studs, open forms and sculptural earrings from our Barcelona atelier, with photographs of the pieces and how they look when worn.

01 / Shape & presence

Choose the effect,
then the pair.

The length of an earring is only part of its presence. A short, solid form can feel bolder than a longer open shape. Compare how much space the piece occupies, where it ends and whether you want it to move.

Close to the ear

Studs with character

A stud sits at the lobe and keeps the outline compact. Look for texture or a clear motif when you want detail without a long drop. It is a useful starting point with high collars, glasses or a busy neckline.

Space within the shape

Open & circular forms

Cut-outs let the background show through. The result can be visually lighter than a solid shape of the same size. “Hollow Circle” describes the design; these pairs have stud backs rather than a conventional hoop closure.

Relief & movement

Sculptural earrings

A teardrop, irregular edge or hanging form gives the eye more to follow. Choose this direction when the earrings are the main detail of your outfit. More visual presence does not automatically mean more weight.

03 / Hair, necklines & autumn layers

Give the earrings
a little room.

With knitwear and high collars

Try a stud or a form that finishes above the collar. If you prefer a longer earring, check that it clears the knit and scarf when you turn your head. A plain sweater gives texture and coloured surfaces a calm background.

With loose hair or an updo

Hair tucked behind the ear reveals a compact shape; loose hair may partly hide it. An updo exposes the outline of a sculptural pair. Look at the earrings from the front and in profile, because the impression can change.

With a necklace

Decide which piece you want to notice first. With expressive earrings, try a quieter neckline or no necklace. For a coordinated look, repeat one element—colour, metal tone or texture—instead of matching every detail.

About face shape: use it as a styling preference, not a restriction. Rounded forms can echo soft lines; longer forms can introduce a vertical line. Your comfort, taste and the way a pair feels when worn matter more than a fixed face-shape rule.

04 / Choosing a finish

Silver, gold
or a touch of colour?

Begin with the colours you already wear and the jewelry you enjoy. Silver can give a cooler contrast; a gold finish adds warmth. You can wear either with black, cream or colour, and mix metal tones if the combination feels right to you.

A finish name is not the same as a material. Silver Hollow Circle is described as 925 sterling silver; 18K Hollow Circle has an 18K gold-plated finish, rather than being solid gold. Amaren pairs are bronze with gold-tone or silver-tone finishes and colour.

05 / Before you choose

Four details
worth checking.

Photographs help you understand the shape. For the final choice, check the written product details too. Model images are styling references; use stated dimensions when you need an exact sense of size.

Size & position

Compare the stated dimensions with a pair you already own. Notice whether the shape sits on the lobe or hangs below it, and how much space you want between the earring and your collar.

Weight & wear time

Think about an evening out or a full day of wear. A large open form can look airy, but visual lightness does not confirm weight. If weight is not stated and it matters to you, ask the atelier before ordering.

Closure & contact materials

Check whether the pair uses a stud post or hook. If you have known metal sensitivities, ask about the exact materials of the post or hook and the back. A silver colour or gold plating alone does not answer that question.

Care & storage

Protect earrings from water, perfume and cosmetics; store pairs separately and dry. Do not polish, scrub or use chemical cleaners on protected, coloured or plated surfaces. Follow our jewelry care guide, or ask us about your exact piece.

06 / Questions about choosing earrings

A few things you may be wondering.

What is the difference between stud and drop earrings?

Stud earrings attach at the lobe with a post and back. Drop earrings extend below the lobe; some use a post, while others use a hook. The attachment and the shape are different details, so check both on the product page.

How do I choose earrings for everyday wear?

Start with a closure you find comfortable, a length that clears your clothes and a weight you are happy wearing for several hours. Then choose the shape or texture that suits your style. Compact studs and open forms are useful options to compare.

Can I wear statement earrings with a necklace?

Yes. Try one piece with stronger presence and another with a simpler shape, or connect them through a shared colour or texture. You can also let the earrings stand on their own.

Are gold-tone earrings the same as gold-plated earrings?

No. Gold tone describes colour; gold plated describes a layer of gold over another material. An 18K gold-plated finish is not solid 18K gold. Read the material and finish of the exact pair rather than judging by its colour.

Which earrings work with autumn knitwear?

With high collars, try studs or shorter forms that leave room above the knit. With an open neckline, a sculptural teardrop or coloured drop can become the main detail. Check longer pairs against scarves to avoid catching them.

Can the atelier help me choose between two pairs?

Yes. Contact Angels Hoch with the product names and tell us what matters to you: size, weight, finish, closure or how you would like to wear them. We can help you compare the product details.
